RestlessOS – A GrapheneOS based GSI for all Android devices.

RestlessOS, ha, what i can say, well at present to be honest, there isn’t much about RestlessOS, but it is a GSI based on GrapheneOS that we can conclude in one phrase, however for sake of expansion, for those who want it, let us view some special and key details about RestlessOS, though not necessary for everyone, but there are those folks who want to know as even little info is useful and provide knowledge, so shall we begin? yeah, you may say nah, it’s so simple, can’t you just say GrapheneOS is privacy based Android operating system only available for Google Pixel devices, but through RestlessOS GSI, it is now unofficially available for all Android devices.

Yo, who denied? yeah basically it is what it is, and that phrase is enough already, and any extension of details may feel cosmetic, yet one thing that we must know for sure is who made RestlessOS? Christopher A. Williamson is founder and lead developer of RestlessOS, and then next question comes why did he created RestlessOS? hmm as we got know from him, RestlessOS is actually his personal project, who always wanted GrapheneOS GSI, so he worked on it for a long time and then released for public usage, at first it is known as GrapheneOS itself, but later on due to copyright claims from GrapheneOS team, he had to change name of GSI to GraphiteOS and then RestlessOS.

Hmm, interesting isn’t it? what makes it more amusing is developer also had to change logo and remove some GrapheneOS reporting feature and some minor stuff to make sure RestlessOS doesn’t conflict with actual GrapheneOS, though GrapheneOS is open source and allows anyone to build it, yet some protocols has to be followed to maintain certain projects legally clean and well, for whatever personal or commercial aspects and reasons etc, anyhow now you folks are very much excited to know what’s the current status of this so called GrapheneOS based GSI, RestlessOS.

it is currently in active development by Christopher A. Williamson and many developers around the world, fixing bugs and booting issues to ensure RestlessOS boots on majority of legacy and modern Android devices, even in those old kernels like 4.4 and 4.14 etc, not absolutely guaranteed, but was informed by developer to test and provide logs, so that he’ll see what can be done to fix it, which is what exactly happening right now, whether through RestlessOS Telegram community or GitHub report bugs feature, users sharing their logcats with developer, so that the future releases of RestlessOS will get bugs fixed and make it boot on their Android devices.

That’s all? hmm, i guess so, wait there is one more important thing i would like to mention here, you may question how exactly did Christopher A. Williamson create a GSI based on GrapheneOS? ain’t no one else other than him ever created GSI of GrapheneOS before, well there are few who tried it, out of them XDA developer Nullvalue’s GrapheneOS got slight recognition last year, Christopher A. Williamson got some tips from Nullvalue on how to create GrapheneOS GSI, but at the end they had their own methods to create GrapheneOS GSI, don’t you wanna know?

Ok, if you insist, I’ll mention about them, Nullvalue team modifying GrapheneOS build scripts to build a GSI, while Christopher A. Williamson opted to adapt GSI scripts to build GrapheneOS GSI, that’s the core difference, here I suspect Nullvalue due to said method struggled and faced difficulties intensively in creating a universally working GSI, and Nullvalue had to even create specific tools from scratch to make GSI work even on his own testing device, so left project once for all, there is no momentum for it right now, but Christopher A. Williamson method is usual practice for building GSI, it has more feasibility, with easy to use and better convenience, which is why RestlessOS got quite buzz and success right now in GSI world.

Christopher A. Williamson, wanted to build GrapheneOS GSI for years, and did it with RestlessOS, and as per him, the way he done things here, someone else could easily maintain this going forward so he foresee a long life for this rom, also developer said he added all trebledroid and f_ck bpf patchset in RestlessOS, so actually he expect it to run fairly on even old Android devices, if you don’t know what is bpf patches and stuff, kindly do your own research about them, cause i don’t want to divert into another topic, will save topic for another article, for now let us focus only on RestlessOS.

RestlessOS is passion project of Christopher A. Williamson, and he wanting GrapheneOS GSI for long time, so he adapted every TrebleDroid patch to Android 16 QPR 2, specifically GrapheneOS adapted Android 16 QPR 2 codebase, as per him it took a good long while, here you were informed RestlessOS is Android 16, QPR 2 not QPR 0, so there is high chances it’ll not boot on legacy 4.4 and 4.14 kernels, that’s it, i really doubt, is there anything else i can say about RestlessOS, that’s the information i can provide at this point, now will end this with few snapshots of RestlessOS, and links of their social community, gotcha?

Finally, RestlessOS is simply unaffiliated and unofficial project based on GrapheneOS GSI, it has similar features, UI and UX everything, just that it is GSI not rom, and works on most Android devices, so if you like RestlessOS and know any such GrapheneOS based GSI projects, then kindly contact us and share your experience, see ya 🙂
